Except it took 3 weeks instead of a quick stab to the heart to put this project to its end. The project lasted around 3 weeks, and since all 4 members work at a 9-5 or more job, we only had few hours a day to spend time on this. It started off as an idea about earth’s elements and overnight evolved into a hero’s tale. Over a dinner with my parents at a restaurant my mind was all over the place. My somewhat destructive 3 year old nephew(anything he sees he will throw on the floor or in the toilet) inspired my idea of destruction and disasters. Every time I saw him throw a cup or plate, I would think what would be the worst case scenario?
With that in mind, I came up with a the story, one thing leading to another. All I needed now was a hero to save the day. At that point I was really happy I was able to nail down a concept over dinner. I laid out the boards in photoshop in the following couple days. I called one of my good versatile friends Matt Lee and took him away from writing taxes, told him the story and gave him a style frame and the next day or two he comes back to me with around 50 amazing characters.
It took another couple days to lay out the animatic and transfer the photoshop boards into something i could animate in after effects. And once that headache was settled, on we went with the animation. Rough layout was finished in the next week and with the timing spaced out pretty well the next week was left for animating effects such as the fire, lightning, and the water with flash and maya.
I haven’t touched flash since pretty much Highschool, so its been a good solid 4 years, and boy has it changed. It was the program that brought me into this wonderful world and it sure brought back memories of my early wannabe animator days. Anyways, as I was animating effects in flash with onion skinning while Tony Varatip at the same time animated the secondary building destruction from the creatures and monsters.
In the final days I was in search for music and came across a very talented composer, Jeff Shum, who was able to add in the final touch with his own original composed music and sfx. I gave everyone as much freedom with their tasks as possible and it all lead from one greater thing to another and it turned out spectacular. And thanks to Luke Lee who came up and pushed me towards the title The Pencil is Mightier, he was relentless.Credits:Director: Peter NgConcept Art/Storyboards: Peter NgMonster Character Designs: Matt LeeLead 2d/3d Animation: Peter NgAdditional 2d/Animation: Tony VaratipMusic: Jeff Shum
